It can take some time and little bit of effort. but once you finished and you finally squeezed everything up into your suitcase, you still have to make sure that the suitcase is within the airline weight restriction.

You need to know that every airline is different, every one of them sets their own requirements for luggage. so make sure to check the weight limit your airline offer. Just visit their website and you be able to find anything you need to know there.

The majority of people when they start packing for the trip they end up overpacking. Simply because they pack everything they think they’ll need during their trip. That’s why they end up overpacking, and they pay up to hundreds of dollars for baggage fees at the airport.

Save yourself a hassle by weighing your luggage at home before you headed to the airport. That will help you to stay out of any problems comes with the baggage fees.

When weighing your luggage you need to keep in mind that no scale will give you the exact numbers. It’s up to the discretion of the airline agent and the scale they use as to whether or not a bag is within the limit requirement.

In this blog post I will show you 6 different ways to weigh your luggage, and avoid the baggage fees that tend to become more expensive every time you visit the airport.

1. Use a Luggage Scale

One of the best and easiest ways to know the weight of your luggage and to stay away from paying the baggage fees, is by using a luggage scale. You can simply link the hook on the scale to the suitcase handle, and lift the scale and the bag together off the ground, and hold it steady, then the scale will give you the weight of your luggage.

There are two different types of luggage scale out there. The analog one and the digital scale, although digital ones are more common nowadays.

With the analog one you can simply secure your bag to the scale, lift the scale high enough so that the bag is floating, and then see the result.

With The digital luggage scale, you will first have to power it on and then secure the bag to it, and left the scale high enough so that the bag is in the air. then you will see the bag’s weight on the scales’s screen.

Whether you go with an analog or digital scale is up to you. Both of them are good, and you can find them in any shop near you, or you can just order them online because, it’s the easiest way.

2. The Home Scale

It seems that the majority of people has a normal house weighing scale, so why not use it for weight your luggage before you travel.

This option is not the most reliable, but it can do the job if you’re in a pinch for time. Here’s how you can weigh the bags on it.

  • First weigh yourself and record your measurements.
  • After that, carry the bag and stand on the scale again and weigh yourself and record the measurement.
  • Now, all you need to do is subtract the first number to the second number you get. The number that will show up is the weight of your luggage.

Remember this method of weighing your luggage will not give you the exact number, but it will be close. Always add up to 3 lbs (if you weight with the lbs) to the number that you get from this method, it’s better to be safe then paying baggage fees.

3. The Airport Scale

One of the best ways to weigh your luggage is by using the airport scale. Many airport tend to have scales for travelers to weigh their luggage before the check in counter. And that’s a good thing for you if you don’t have a luggage scale at home. all you need to do is get to the airport earlier than you’re supposed to be, and weight your luggage there.

However, you need to know that the statistic Hipmunk posted comes from a Wall Street journal article claiming that 6% to 77% of airport scales are inaccurate by at least one pound, potentially resulting in a baggage fee for you.

So like I said, don’t trust any luggage weigh method, always add some extra pounds to the weight you find to be more safe from paying those baggage fees. except the luggage scale, because it’s made just for this job that’s why it’s so specific when it comes to giving you the exact number that the counter in the airport will give you.

4. The Post Office Scale

The post office scale is one of the best free places to weigh your luggage. You will often find large industrial sized scales for public use in most of the post offices lobbie where you can easily weigh your luggage.

This method will provide you with an accurate value of the weight. And what’s even great is when you see that you are going over the allowed weight, you can just ship stuff at home. After all, you’re already in a post office, you will save both time in money.

Note: it’s better to weigh your luggage at home using a luggage scale, because sometimes you will pack your stuff and weigh the luggage, and again pack and weigh, so many times until you get the right thing, So it’s better to be more comfortable.

5. Suitcase With Built In Scale

One way to weigh your luggage and make sure you will never overpacked, is by using a suitcase with the scale already built in. we live in the technology era, and that’s a good thing for us. the companies that designs suitcases are make it easy for travelers to know the weight of their luggage without buying a luggage scale. All they need to do is push a button in the suitcase, and the weight will show up. The Raden suitcases offer this convenience method to help you even more in your trip.

Overweight bags and baggage fees will become a thing of the past once you start traveling with the built in weight scale suitcases. The good news is, these suitcases are not that expensive, and there is one for every budget traveler.

6. Estimate Your Luggage Weight

Now, I don’t recommend you to estimate your luggage weight at home without using any scales at all. You probably won’t get the exact number. However, sometimes you forget that you need to know the weight of your luggage before going to the airport and you don’t have any scales at home. Or maybe it’s already the middle of the night, and your flights is early in the morning, there’s no way you can get your hands on a luggage scale at that time.

That’s why sometimes estimating your luggage weight is better than not knowing it at all.

One of the easiest ways to estimate the weight of your luggage is by comparing it with other weights that are already known, such as water container (a gallon of water weighs 3.79 kg or 8.35 pounds).

  • Just grab some water containers MAX OF 50 lbs (50 lbs is the maximum weight for most airlines), and put them together in a light bag such as duffel bag (a large duffel bag weigh less than 2 lbs or 0,90 kg),
  • And then carry both bags, the bag with the water containers and your suitcase and see which one if heavier.
  • If the water container are heavier that’s good. But if your suitcase is heavier then you need to remove some stuff from it, and do this again.

Weigh Recommend For Checked And Carry On Luggage

When you want to weigh your luggage at home, first you need to know what’s the weight you should not pass in both checked luggage and carry on luggage.

For checked luggage: most of the big airline companies such as Delta, United and American Airline, has the same weight requirement for checked baggage. All the bags must be under 50 pounds (22.67 Kg). And the bag’s size cannot exceed 62 inches when the length, width are added together. Some of the airline let their premium customers to bring up to 70 pounds (31.75 Kg).

For carry on luggage: carry on weight are not like the checked baggage weight. most of the airline has different rules when it comes to carry on. Like for many cases, the size of the carry on is more important than its weight. Because most of them must fit in the overhead compartment, so if you have a big carry on they will not let you carry it inside the plane.

In general some airline will let you bring heavy carry on bags, while the other is not. For example the Air France allow weight up to 26 pounds (11.8 Kg), while the Alerican Airline and Delta allow for 40 pounds (18.14 Kg), that’s very close to the checked baggage.
